Colonial clerks wrote names by ear. "Ramnarine" can appear as Ram Narain, Ramnarayan, Ram Naraen, Ramnerene. Most emigration registers recorded the district (zillah), not the village. Recorded ages were often guessed by the depot doctor. Caste entries reflect what was declared at signing, which sometimes was strategic.
