The word girmit is a corruption of the English agreement — the paper contract under which lakhs of Indians, mostly from Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh, were taken across the oceans between 1834 and 1920 to work the sugar, rice, and rubber estates of the British, Dutch, and French colonies. शब्द गिरमिट अंग्रेज़ी शब्द एग्रीमेंट का अपभ्रंश है — वह कागज़ी अनुबंध जिसके अधीन 1834 से 1920 के बीच लाखों भारतीयों को, मुख्यतः बिहार और पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश से, ब्रिटिश, डच और फ्रांसीसी उपनिवेशों के गन्ना, धान और रबर के बागानों में काम करने के लिए समुद्र पार ले जाया गया।
The system began in the years after Britain's abolition of slavery in 1834. It ended only after long campaigning by figures like Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, C.F. Andrews, and Mahatma Gandhi led the Imperial Legislative Council to halt recruitment in 1917; the last passages sailed by 1920. यह प्रथा 1834 में ब्रिटेन द्वारा दास-प्रथा के उन्मूलन के बाद के वर्षों में आरंभ हुई। पंडित मदन मोहन मालवीय, सी.एफ. एंड्रूज़ और महात्मा गांधी जैसे लोगों के लंबे संघर्ष के बाद 1917 में इम्पीरियल लेजिस्लेटिव काउंसिल ने भर्ती पर रोक लगाई; अंतिम जहाज़ 1920 तक चले।
